Pilgrim Nuclear
Jim is not opposed to nuclear power, as long as all safety precautions are taken. This view is shared by the state’s Attorney General who in 2006 warned that an accident involving the spent fuel pool at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth would present a significant risk to the public safety. As the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan has thrust the issue of nuclear safety back into the spotlight, Jim has actively participated in public hearings regarding the safety of the Pilgrim plant. Jim filed legislation he authored to expand the emergency planning zone around Pilgrim from 10 to 25 miles. Unless the utility fully funds and carries out a plan to permanently store the current level of nuclear waste created by the plant that is on that site, Jim will continue to oppose the proposed relicensing of the Pilgrim Nuclear Plant. In December of 2011, Jim successfully urged the state’s Attorney General to appeal the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) review of the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board’s (ASLB) refusal to consider the implications of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in connection with relicensing proceedings for the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.
